The Miss Tourism International pageant has been dubbed as the New Year’s Eve pageant as it has been held every 30th of December. But aside from that moniker, nothing much is known about the pageant.
Let’s take a quick look at this pageant which has been crowning ladies since 1994. Yes, Miss Tourism International is not a fly by night pageant using “tourism” as its name and being held in some obscure Chinese city. Miss Tourism International has been a pageant institution for more than two decades now.
Miss Tourism International was started by Tan Sri Datuk Danny Ooi H.E in 1994 with the inaugural pageant held in Malaysia and won by Australian Michelle Leigh Holmes. There were 26 candidates who participated in the first edition of the pageant.
Since then, this Malaysian-based pageant has steadily grown and is now participated by around 60 candidates annually, except for the years 1996, 1997, 2007 and 2015 when the pageant was not held.
The most successful country in this pageant is the Philippines, having won the crown thrice — Maria Esperanza Manzano (2000), Rizzini Alexis Gomez (2012) and Angeli Dione Gomez (2013). This was followed by another pageant powerhouse, India, which already brought home the title twice, Candice Pinto (2001) and Manasvi Mamgai (2008).
The reigning Miss Tourism International is Ariel Pearse from New Zealand. She was crowned, per tradition, on December 31, 2016 in Putrajaya, Malaysia.
